Interview with Invisible Oranges

It’s October 10, 2015. I’m in Oakland for California Deathfest, sitting in a hotel room at the Mariott. Heineken and Burnett’s are in good supply. Members of Antediluvian and Ritual Necromancy are talking politics with the staff of No Clean Singing and taking turns going down for cigarettes (nobody has a room key).

I’m sitting next to Matron Thorn, while we wait for Val “Ascaris” Dorr to make her way back to the room so we can conduct an interview. Deftones is playing, and Thorn tells me he’s never listened to Iron Maiden. It’s not true: Ascaris corrects him in an elevator ride we share with a couple en route to a wedding

“You said this last time and we made you listen to ‘The Trooper’”

“Oh, you’re right.”

Further Revelations…

There is no adherence to a continuum established by others for the frequency of our publication output. Our path is our own, our timeline belongs to the Abysscape.

Veils of the unsanctified dead have been devoured, the sinister omen has been delivered, the murk has cradled the writhing tentacles of horror, the enthralled have achieved bliss in night’s forbidden womb.

We have begun recording what will become the fifth Ævangelist album forDebemur Morti Productions.

Shadow of the Horns: Life-changing metal albums

Ævangelist – “Gatekeeper’s Scroll”

Ævangelist claim to be from Illinois and Oregon, but I suspect they might have ripped through the fabric of space and time and were sent here from a parallel demon dimension. How else do you account for the chaotic hellscape of “Gatekeeper’s Scroll”? This is thrilling, terrifying stuff that doesn’t entirely make sense on a first listen, but compels all the same. Ævangelist are steeped in a harrowingly intense and artful style of blackened death metal that fits somewhere along a plane between French visionaries Blut Aus Nord and Canadian death-maticians Gorguts. Here, it’s not so much time signatures that are being rendered into unpredictable shapes so much as the sound of the song itself. It’s rife with blasts of raucous death metal, but surrounded by storms of ambient sound, with creepy bell sounds that were seemingly plucked from a horror film. This is sheer audio terror, and I love all six minutes and 30 seconds of it.

“Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss” (Album Stream Premiere)

Invisible Oranges premiered the full album stream of Enthrall to the Void of Bliss.  Listen below and read Kelly Kettering’s writeup.

When I picture the black magic cult that rocket scientist Jack Parsons and Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard facilitated together in ’40’s LA (yes, that was a thing) at the Pasadena Lodge, this Aevangelist [Editorial note: IO’s own Jon Rosenthal performs in the live incarnation of Aevangelist] album is exactly the kind of music I bet they were listening to during satanic ceremonies.

Their 4th full length and first for the label 20 Buck Spin, Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss is also the first record Aevangelist has fully released domestically in the US. Not just blackened death metal, this record has a darkly spirited feeling that isn’t easy to shake.

Metal Insider: Hells Headbash went straight to sheol and back

For me, Ævangelist was a one-of-a-kind band who adorned a predictable festival with a light of theatrical creativity sorely missed in a narrow and intransigent environment.

EXCLUSIVE: ÆVANGELIST Unleash Hell With “Gatekeeper’s Scroll”

Ævangelist are a faaaaantasticly heavy blackened death metal band that I have been digging for a while now. The band hails from the States and they absolutely crush. They are going to release their new album Enthrall To The Void Of Bliss early next month and I am so stoked to announce that we here at American Aftermath are premiering a killer new track titled “Gatekeeper’s Scroll” and I want to inform you that it will destroy you. Dude, Ævangelist are so sick.

Check out the track premier here.
